NY Farm Bureau names “Circle of Friends”

New York Farm Bureau, the state's largest general farm advocacy organization, has named 84 State Legislators to its "Circle of Friends" for the year 2009.  The award is an indication of the individual lawmaker's support of New York agriculture and the Farm Bureau.Read full article....

DEC Reports: Bear harvest second highest in state's history

Communities with high taxes could see deep aid cuts
Communities that already pay the highest property taxes will see the deepest cuts in their state school aid under the budget proposed by Gov. Paterson. Once again eschewing across-the-board aid cuts, Paterson is targeting districts where residents already pay higher than normal property tax bills, arguing that these so-called "wealthy" districts can best afford to weather his cuts. In Jefferson, Oswego and St. Lawrence Counties, that means nearly double-digit aid cuts for at least 10 school districts. Read full article

State police report on gun thefts

The New York State Police Troop “B” Gun Investigation Unit reports 117 guns stolen in northern New York during 2009. Troop “B” includes Clinton, Essex, Franklin, St. Lawrence and northern Hamilton Counties and this information includes gun thefts reported to all law enforcement agencies within these counties. St. Lawrence County reported the most stolen guns, with 40. Only eight of those were recovered. Read full article

Happy 90th Cecile Holt
A surprise birthday party was held on January 30, in honor of Cecile Holt on her 90th birthday. The party was given by her family at the home of her daughter, Donna Gaumes. About 50 friends and family members attended. Cecile was presented with a beautiful cake and many gifts. Cecile is featured in the above photo with her three children Patti Bigarel, Donna Gaumes and Rick Holt. She also has seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.


Space heaters involved in 79 percent of fatal home heating fires
 
While only 32 percent of home heating fires involve space heaters, they are involved in 79 percent of home heating fire deaths, according to the new report released last week by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Heating equipment continues to be the second leading cause of home fires behind cooking and the second leading cause of home fire deaths behind smoking.

Winter Demolition Derby RESCHEDULED to March 7th

Due to a conflict with an event to be held at the LaFargeville Speedway on Sunday, February 28, officials with the Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair have decided to change the date of their winter demolition derby to Sunday, March 7, at 1 p.m.
The derby will take place in front of the grandstand at the Gouverneur Fairgrounds. The event, weather permitting, will take place on a sheet of ice.
There’ll be a $20 entry fee with a 75 percent payback for heat winners. The champion will receive a trophy and $350.
Those who wish to participate, or would like more information, can call Derby Superintendent Brennan Shampine at 405-7703 or Fair President Don Peck at 771-7690.
Entry applications are available at Newvine’s or G&R Auto Parts. Drivers can pre-enter or enter after 10 a.m. on derby day.
Admission for spectators will be $10.
