Although
this is only the beginning of
the school year, high school students
are already looking forward to
their upcoming prom and graduation.
Parents and school districts are
beginning to form committees to
plan overnight parties to mark
those defining rites of passage.
The “safe” prom and
graduation parties are supervised
events that became popular in
most school districts during the
1980’s and 1990s. They were
established to create alternatives
to the alcohol-related celebrations
that used to be common when the

“Pink
Zone” planning well
underway

It is quickly becoming one of the most popular
fundraisers the Gouverneur area has to offer…
and it is certainly the most colorful!
Pink is back!
Organizer Tim Knowlton informs us that planning
for the Pink Zone 2012 is well under way, and
this year’s event promises to be even
more fun and exciting than in the past.
For those not familiar with this yearly event,
it was started four years ago by the boys and
girls basketball teams at GHS.
Pink basketballs, nets, whistles and decor were
the theme, along with trying to bring an awareness
of breast cancer to the event. Year one raised
$1,500, year two raised $2,500 and last year
the total amount raised was a staggering $12,000. Read Full article....

Upstanding Citizens charged for fighting in broad daylight!

A High School Principal, the BOCES principal, business owners, Rotary Club, Kiwanis, and Lions club members…all charged and accused of aiding in the fight against cancer as well as other serious diseases.
It’s all part of the ongoing “Pink Zone” fundraiser. The Criminal Justice class at Southwest Tech BOCES, Fowler, has compiled a list of citizens and organizations to be given appearance tickets for the date of Friday, January 27, at 10 a.m., before the Pink Zone Court located in the Criminal Justice room at Southwest Tech. New Physicians Assistants from Ohio welcomed by E.J. Noble

Adam Rowe and Kelly Stiffler came to Gouverneur in search of hands-on work experience in which they can see the outcome of the help they provide.
Mr. Rowe will be the new Physician’s Assistant (PA) for the Edwards Health Center and Ms. Stiffler, also a PA, will be working part time at both the Hermon-DeKalb school-based clinic and the Russell Health Center. Read Full Article
Ryan Hight, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Hight, of Gouverneur Central, has been selected as the Career and Technical Education Student of the Month at Southwest Tech (BOCES) for December. Ryan studies the Multi-Occupations curriculum at Southwest Tech. The Student of the Month award is sponsored by the Gouverneur Chamber of Commerce and is awarded to those students whose efforts are of the highest caliber. Cancer Services Program of St.
Lawrence County and St. Lawrence County Employees in collaboration
with Hair Designs of Canton NY offered “Pink Hair Extension’s”
for the month of October to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. The joint effort raised a combined total of $2,320. The
monies raised were donated to the Gouverneur Business Women’s
Breast Cancer Walk Fund. Their mission is to help breast cancer
patients during and after treatment that are having financial
difficulties. The funds stay and help breast cancer patient’s
right here in St. Lawrence County. To contact the Gouvernuer Business
Women’s Breast Walk Fund please call 287-2565 or check them

The Cancer Services Program of St. Lawrence County provides free
breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening to the uninsured
residents of St. Lawrence County. Please call 386-2325 to screen
for eligibility. Those present at the check presentation were

Price Chopper recalls gourmet
stuffed clams
Price Chopper Supermarkets is issuing
a voluntary recall on Gourmet Stuffed Clams from its
seafood departments with a scale code of 20918100000.
Price Chopper operates stores in Potsdam, Canton, Gouverneur,
Ogdensburg and Massena in St. Lawrence County.
The stuffed clams are being recalled because they contain
milk, wheat and eggs, which are known allergens and
are not listed on the store-generated ingredient label. Read full article....

The cost is $5 each.
The calendars are being sold by the Gouverneur Lions Club. They
were previously sold by the
Gouverneur Business Women. When you purchase a calendar, you can
list your special dates: birthdays,anniversary, etc… for
free.

If the early detection of cancer is key in a quick recovery… then little Kristen Lee Ann “Krissy” Hays, 5, of Gouverneur, stands a very good chance at making a full recovery. And besides… Grandpa’s special 55-year old holy oil certainly can’t hurt!

Vintage Snowmobile races at
the Fairgrounds
The Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County
Fair have announced that they will host vintage snowmobile
races this winter. The event will be new to the fairgrounds
and should prove to be very entertaining.
The races will be held on the ½-mile oval race
track at the fairgrounds on Saturday, February 4th.
There will be over 25 classes of vintage sleds from
1984 and older, with speeds reaching up to 100 miles
per hour!.
