A graveside service for Sally Smith, 69, of Calcium, but formerly of Gouverneur and Watertown, was held on Friday, January 6, 2012, in the New St. James Cemetery, Gouverneur. Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, was in charge of the arrangements.
Ms. Smith died Sunday, January 1, 2012, at her home under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Born on April 7, 1942, in Macomb, she was a daughter of William Henry and Retha Mae (Hitchman) Smith. She attended Gouverneur schools.
Sally lived around Gouverneur and Watertown until moving to South Carolina twenty-five years ago. She returned to the Watertown area in 2010.
She had worked a variety of jobs including work at BOMAX Corp. in Watertown, shipping and receiving for a government contractor, doughnut shops and department stores. She enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles.
She had previously been married to Thomas Matejcik.
Ms. Smith is survived by her five children William Matejcik, of Calcium, April Matejcik, of Watertown, Penny Carrow, of Watertown, Thomas Matejcik Jr., of Calcium, and John Matejcik, of Texas; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers Denver Smith, of South Carolina, James Smith, of New York, Hollie Smith, of Florida, and Mark Smith, of Fowler; two sisters Joanne Rose, of Gouverneur, and Pansy Bowhall, of Fowler; several nieces and nephews; and a longtime friend and companion David Marshall, of South Carolina.
She was predeceased by a brother, Patsy Smith.
