DEKALB JUNCTION – The funeral service for Floyd S. “Duff”
Powell, 82, of DeKalb Junction, will be Saturday, March 6, 2010, at
11 a.m., at the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church, with Reverend
William Hart officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. A calling
hour, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., will precede the service at the Allen-Denesha
Funeral Home, DeKalb Junction.
Mr. Powell died on, Saturday, February 20, 2010, at Maplewood Campus.
Born August 5, 1927, in DeKalb Junction, he was the son of Floyd S.
and Ethel (Ackley) Powell. He graduated from DeKalb Junction High
School in 1944. He graduated from Canton Agricultural and Technical
Institute on October 1, 1945.
Mr. Powell served in the U.S. Army from 1945–1946, being honorably
discharged, and he received the WWII Victory Medal.
He married Eileen Wearthup, on April 23, 1950, at her parent’s
home in DeKalb with Reverend Howard Gabriel officiating. Mrs. Powell
died June 16, 2002.
From 1946 to 1950, Mr. Powell was a boiler operator for National
Lead Co. in Tahawas. From 1950 to 1955, he worked as an electrician
at ALCOA, Massena. In 1956 he was a bus driver and head custodian at
Hermon-DeKalb Central School eventually becoming Superintendent of Buildings
and Grounds. He retired in 1989.
In 1960, Mr. Powell became one of the first lay speakers in the St.
Lawrence District of the Methodist Church. He served as a supply Pastor,
on church committees at the local, district and conference levels in
many area United Methodist Churches.
For 25 years Mr. Powell was Treasurer of the DeKalb Junction Fire Commissioners.
He was a member of the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church, Union
Cemetery Association, DeKalb Historical Association, and the DeKalb-Hermon
Senior Citizen Club.
In 2009, he received the award for St. Lawrence County Outstanding Contribution
by a Senior Citizen. He then won the New York State Outstanding
Contribution by a Senior Citizen Award.
Duff loved music, games, camping, his community, making maple syrup,
singing, he sang in the church choir, at Grange events, Hermon-DeKalb
Central School graduation, weddings, and for funerals. He played
trumpet in the Tahawas Band and later in the Seymour Western Band.
He is survived by two sons Dennis (Barbara), Endwell, and Warren, DeKalb
Junction; two daughters, Kathleen (William) McAdoo, Hermon, and Sheila
(Mike) Newtown, Depeyster; and seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kevin,
and Scott McAdoo, Daniel and Matthew Powell, and Sarah and Kristopher
Newtown.
He was predeceased by a brother, Philip Powell; and a sister, Florence
Craig.
